Learn the local vocabulary for your restriction

Portuguese restaurant staff are generally warm and accommodating, but allergy awareness varies widely. Knowing the right words removes ambiguity. For gluten-free, the key phrase is "sem glúten" (sehm GLOO-ten). Dairy-free is "sem lacticínios." If you need to avoid nuts, say "sem frutos secos." Vegan is "vegan" or "vegano/vegana." Print a small card with your restriction in Portuguese and show it to your server — this is standard practice for many allergy travellers and is received well.

Call or message ahead

Most Lisbon restaurants — especially smaller, family-run ones — are happy to accommodate dietary needs if you give them notice. A quick Instagram message or phone call the morning of your visit makes a real difference. Ask whether they can adapt a dish, whether the kitchen uses a shared fryer, and whether they have an allergen menu. Restaurants that say yes without hesitation tend to be the safest.

Be cautious with traditional dishes

Caldo verde, the national soup, is safe on paper but is often served with a slice of chouriço containing gluten. Pastéis de nata (custard tarts) contain gluten, dairy, and eggs.
